A privacy fence is about one thing: getting your yard back. When houses sit close together, a full-height solid fence blocks the neighbor’s view, softens street noise, and turns the backyard into a space that feels like yours. Height, board style, and how deep the posts go all decide how well it works, and that is where a good build pays off.

Our Process

How We Build a Privacy Fence in Houston

  • 01 Consultation & Site Evaluation

We start on your property with a free consultation. We measure the run, check grade and drainage, and talk through what you need to block, whether that is the neighbors, the street, or road noise, since that shapes the height and layout.

  • 02 Height, Style & Material

We help you choose the height, usually 6 to 8 feet, and the board style, like board-on-board for zero gaps or a clean cap and trim. Then we pick the material, cedar or pine wood or low-maintenance vinyl, so your privacy fence fits your look and budget.

  • 03 Permits & HOA Approval

Tall fences can trigger a city height permit, and many Houston communities have HOA or deed rules on height, material, and which side faces out. We confirm the current rules for your address and pull any permit or approval that applies before we start, so there are no surprises later.

  • 04 Wind-Ready Build

A tall solid fence catches wind, so the build has to be strong. We set posts deep in concrete footings on our clay soil, space them for our wind zone, and brace the runs, then hang the boards tight so the fence gives full privacy and holds up in storms.

  • 05 Final Walkthrough & Care

We walk the finished fence with you, check the gates, and make sure the screening is solid with no gaps. If it is wood, we tell you when to stain it, and we can handle that too, so your privacy fence stays sealed against Houston sun and rot for years.

What Sets Our Privacy Fences Apart

A privacy fence only works if it stays up and stays gap-free. Plenty of crews under-set the posts and butt the boards, then the fence leans and opens up. We build for real seclusion: deep-set posts, tight board-on-board runs, and wind bracing. With 20+ years in Houston and 500+ projects done, we make privacy that lasts.

  • True Full-Height Screening

We build 6 to 8 foot runs with board-on-board or tight-fit panels so there are no gaps to see through, even after wood shrinks in Houston heat. That is real seclusion, not a fence you can peek right past.

  • Engineered for Houston Wind

Tall solid fences catch wind, which is why so many blow over here. We space and brace posts for our wind zone and set them deep in concrete, so your privacy fence rides out storm season.

  • Height Rules and HOA Handled

We confirm city height limits and work inside your HOA or deed restrictions, then pull the approvals for you, so the fence you want is the fence you are allowed to keep.

Our Commitment

Privacy Fences Built for How Houston Lives Outside

A privacy fence has one job, and how you build it decides whether it does that job for a year or for a decade. Height comes first: most backyard privacy fences here run 6 to 8 feet so they screen the neighbors and the street. Then comes the board style, and this is where a lot of fences fall short. Standard stockade boards butt edge to edge and open small gaps as the wood dries in Houston heat. Board-on-board overlaps the boards so the screening stays solid.

The build under the boards matters just as much. A tall solid fence is basically a sail, so wind is the number one reason privacy fences blow over in our storm season. We answer that with correct post spacing, deeper post setting in concrete, and bracing sized for our wind zone. Because the clay soil under most Houston yards swells and shrinks, we set posts deep enough that seasonal soil movement cannot heave the fence out of level.

Privacy is the purpose, and the material is how you get there, so we build in both wood and vinyl. Cedar gives a warm natural look at a lower upfront cost but needs staining to fight rot and fading here. Vinyl costs more at first, never needs staining, and will not rot in our humidity. Many Houston communities also cap fence height or set material and finished-side rules through an HOA, and a city permit may be required above a certain height, so we confirm the rules for your address and handle the approvals before we build.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How tall can a privacy fence be in Houston?

Most backyard privacy fences here are built 6 to 8 feet tall, since taller fences give better screening from neighbors and the street. Houston may require a permit above a certain height, and your HOA or deed restrictions can cap the height in many master-planned communities. Rules vary by location, so we confirm the current height limits for your address before we build, and we handle any permit that applies.

  • Do I need a permit for a 6 or 8 foot privacy fence?

It depends on your address. Houston may require a permit above a certain fence height and in some utility easements, and Harris County rules can differ. On top of city rules, an HOA or deed restriction may require plan approval before you build. We check the current requirements for your property and pull any permit or HOA approval that applies, so your privacy fence is legal and stays up.

  • Which material is best for a privacy fence, wood or vinyl?

Both make a solid privacy fence, and the choice comes down to look, budget, and upkeep. Wood, especially cedar, gives a natural look at a lower upfront cost but needs staining to fight Houston rot and fading. Vinyl costs more at first but never needs staining and will not rot in our humidity. Privacy is the goal, and the material is how you reach it, so we walk you through both. See our wood fences and vinyl fences pages for the full material details.

  • Will a privacy fence survive Houston hurricane winds?

A tall solid fence catches a lot of wind, which is exactly why so many fences blow over in Houston storms. The fix is in the build: correct post spacing, deeper post setting in concrete, and proper bracing on 6 to 8 foot runs. We engineer privacy fences for our wind zone so they hold up far better than an under-set builder-grade fence. If a storm does damage a fence, our fence repair team can reset it.

  • How do I get HOA approval for a privacy fence?

Many Houston master-planned communities have HOA or deed rules on fence height, material, and which side faces the street, often called finished side out. We build to those specs and can provide the details your architectural committee needs to approve the plan. We have worked inside plenty of Houston HOAs over 20+ years, so we know the common rules and help you clear approval before the crew shows up.

  • What is a board-on-board privacy fence?

Board-on-board overlaps the fence boards so there are no gaps, even after the wood shrinks and dries out in Houston heat. A standard stockade fence butts the boards edge to edge, which can open small gaps over time and let neighbors see through. For true seclusion we usually recommend board-on-board, and we can add a cap and trim for a cleaner, finished top. It is a popular upgrade on wood privacy fences here.
